Indra Jatra, the festival (more like a carnival) which falls usually on September, is significant as this festival marks the beginning of month-long festivals in autumn. Indra Jatra is held in honor of god Indra who is kings of the gods ruling from heaven and raining is believed to be his blessing. Lichhavi King Gunkamadev started Indra Jatra in Kalighat Sambat 3882.
Indra Jatra is celebrated for 8 days starting from Dwadasi of Bhadra month to Krishana Chaturdashi every year according to the lunar calendar. On the primary day of this celebration a shaft, Linga or Yasing Dyaa, with a banner on the top is set up at hanuman Dhoka.
