Lukla Airport is one of the exciting/thrilling airports in the world. The airport is situated in the high terrain and is only 527m.x30m. big. Built in 1964, under the supervision of Sir. Edmund Hillary- one of the first persons to get to the top of Mount Everest. (Climbed with Tenzing Norgay Sherapa together in 1953).

The Lukla airport has later renamed to Tenzing-Hillary Airport in 2008 in honor of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary- the first two persons to climb Mount Everest. The runway was unpaved till 2001.

Lukla Airport History

According to Wikipedia,
“The airport was built in 1964 under supervision of Edmund Hillary, who originally intended to build the airport on flat farmlands; however, local farmers did not want to give up their land, so the airport was built at its current position. Hillary bought the land from local Sherpas for 2650 US-Dollar and involved them in building the facilities. It has been said that Hillary was unhappy with the runway’s soil resistance, and that his solution was to buy local liquor for the Sherpas and ask them to perform foot-stomping dance to flatten the land which served as the runway. The runway was paved only in 2001.”

Lukla Airport is not just being used for taking the people for Everest Base Camp Trekking/ Everest Expedition but it is the transport way for the people who take their foods, daily needs things and the construction materials through Tenzing Hillary Airport.
