Trip Overview

If you are an adventure seeker looking for big Himalayan views without the weeks of commitment required for Base Camp, the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is your perfect match. This isn’t just a walk in the park; it is a journey into the heart of the Annapurna Conservation Area.

You will tackle the infamous 3,300 stone steps of Ulleri, wander through ancient rhododendron forests that turn neon red in spring, and stand at 3,210 meters watching the sun paint the 8,000-meter peaks of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna I in shades of gold and violet.

Beyond the physical challenge, this trek immerses you in the warmth of Gurung and Magar hospitality. You will sleep in cozy teahouses where the wood stoves crackle at night and wake up to the sound of mule caravans’ bells ringing in the crisp mountain air. It is accessible, culturally rich, and visually spectacular—the ultimate introduction to trekking in Nepal.

Trip Highlights

  • The Poon Hill Sunrise: Stand at 3,210m before dawn to witness one of the world’s most famous sunrises, illuminating the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges.
  • The Ulleri Challenge: Test your endurance on the legendary 3,300 stone steps leading up to Ulleri village, a physical feat that earns you bragging rights.
  • Enchanted Forests: Trek through Nepal’s largest rhododendron forests, which transform into a vibrant canopy of red, pink, and white blooms during March and April.
  • Gurung Culture in Ghandruk: Explore the maze-like stone alleyways of Ghandruk, a traditional Gurung village with a rich history of Gurkha soldiers and preserved heritage.
  • Panoramic Mountain Views: Enjoy constant, up-close views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli dominating the skyline throughout the trail.

Your adventure begins the moment you land at Tribhuvan International Airport. Our representative will meet you at the chaotic yet charming arrival terminal and transfer you to your hotel in Thamel.

The drive gives you a first taste of Kathmandu’s sensory overload—rickshaws, incense, and ancient temples tucked between concrete buildings.

After settling in, we will hold a pre-trip briefing to check your gear and introduce you to your trekking guide. The evening is yours to explore the bustling streets of Thamel or enjoy a quiet dinner as you prepare for the journey ahead.

We start early at 7:00 AM for a scenic drive to Pokhara via the Prithvi Highway. This 6-7 hour journey follows the winding Trishuli and Marsyangdi rivers, offering glimpses of white-water rafters and terraced rice paddies carved into steep hills.

We stop for a local lunch of Dal Bhat at a roadside restaurant, giving you a taste of the fuel that powers trekkers. As we approach Pokhara, the massive bulk of Annapurna South and the sharp peak of Machhapuchhre suddenly appear on the horizon.

The evening is free for you to walk along the serene Phewa Lake and enjoy the laid-back vibe of Nepal’s adventure capital.

The real adventure starts today. A 1.5-hour private jeep drive takes us to Nayapul, the gateway to the Annapurna Sanctuary.

From here, we begin trekking along the Modi Khola river, passing through the busy market town of Birethanti, where we check our permits. The trail starts gently but soon brings us to Tikhedhunga.

After lunch, prepare for the day’s biggest challenge: the steep ascent to Ulleri. You will climb over 3,300 stone steps.

It is a grueling 2-hour push, but as you gain elevation, the views of the valley open up, and you are rewarded with your first close-up look at Annapurna South from your teahouse in Ulleri.

Wake up to a stunning view of Hiunchuli and Annapurna South right from your window. After a hearty breakfast of Tibetan bread and eggs, we leave Ulleri and enter the dense rhododendron and oak forests.

The trail is cooler and more shaded today, passing through sparkling streams and small waterfalls. If you are trekking in spring, this section is a magical tunnel of red flowers.

We stop at Nangethanti for lunch before the final ascent to Ghorepani. This village is a major trading stop, and the blue-roofed teahouses here offer a lively atmosphere with trekkers from around the world gathering around the central heater in the dining halls.

We wake up in the dark at 4:30 AM and switch on our headlamps for the 45-minute hike up to Poon Hill.

The cold is forgotten the moment the sun crests the horizon, setting the snow-capped giants of Dhaulagiri (8,167m) and Annapurna I (8,091m) on fire with orange light.

It is a moment of pure awe. After taking photos and enjoying hot tea at the summit, we descend back to Ghorepani for breakfast.

We then pack up and trek along a scenic ridge to Deurali before dropping down into a deep, mossy gorge filled with waterfalls, eventually climbing back up to the village of Tadapani, famous for its close-up views of Machhapuchhre.

We arrive by lunch, giving you the afternoon to wander the stone stairways, visit the traditional museum, or simply sit on the terrace of your teahouse and watch the clouds drift over Annapurna South and Hiunchuli.

Trip Information

Best Season & Weather

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is best experienced during two main windows: Pre-monsoon (Spring) and Post-monsoon (Autumn). Spring (March to May) is warmer, with daytime temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C, and is famous for blooming rhododendrons that paint the hills red.

Autumn (September to November) offers the clearest skies and sharpest mountain views, though mornings can be cold (down to 0°C or -5°C at Ghorepani). Winter (Dec-Feb) is doable but cold, while the Monsoon (Jun-Aug) brings leeches and rain that obscure the views.

Visa Requirements & Costs

Getting a visa for Nepal is straightforward for most nationalities. You can obtain a Visa on Arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. You will need a passport valid for at least 6 months and a passport-sized photo (though the new kiosks take a digital photo).

The costs are $30 USD for 15 days$50 USD for 30 days, or $125 USD for 90 days. It is highly recommended to bring exact cash (USD, EUR, or AUD) to pay the fee at the counter to speed up the process.

Accommodation Standards

On this trek, you will stay in Teahouses, which are simple, family-run lodges. Do not expect luxury hotels; these are rustic and charming. Rooms are typically small with two twin beds, foam mattresses, a pillow, and a warm blanket (we provide sleeping bags for extra warmth).

Toilets are usually shared and can be Western-style or squat-style. The dining area is the heart of the teahouse, heated by a central wood/yak dung stove in the evenings, where you will eat, chat, and play cards with fellow trekkers.

Cultural Etiquette

Respecting local customs ensures a warmer welcome. In villages like Ghandruk, always walk clockwise around stupas, mani walls, and prayer wheels. When greeting locals, place your palms together and say “Namaste.” Avoid wearing revealing clothing; shorts should be knee-length, and shoulders should be covered.

Public displays of affection are frowned upon. Always ask for permission before taking photos of people, especially monks or elderly locals. In temples, remove your shoes and leather items before entering inner sanctuaries.

Money & ATM Availability

Cash is king in the mountains. While there are plenty of ATMs in Kathmandu and Pokhara, there are NO ATMs on the trek route itself (Ghorepani, Tadapani, etc.).

You must withdraw enough Nepali Rupees (NPR) in Pokhara to cover your personal expenses like Wi-Fi (approx. 300-500 NPR), hot showers (300-500 NPR), charging electronics, snacks, and tips for the crew. We recommend carrying roughly 3,000 to 4,000 NPR per day for these extras to be safe.
