Chulu East Peak is part of the remarkable Chulu range, which includes its siblings – Chulu West (6,429 meters / 21,093 feet) and Chulu Far East (6,029 meters / 19,750 feet). Each peak in this range presents challenges and rewards, but Chulu East stands out for its accessibility and spectacular vistas. The peak was first successfully scaled in 1955 by a German expedition via the northeast route, marking it a significant milestone in Himalayan mountaineering. The climb to Chulu East is renowned for its panoramic views of some of the world’s highest and most beautiful mountains.

Essential Information - Chulu East Peak Climbing

Chulu East Peak climbing is a technically challenging adventure suitable for experienced mountaineers. The climbing grade of PD+ (per tricky) reflects the difficulty and technical skill required to reach the summit. Climbers must have previous high-altitude experience and familiarity with climbing gear and equipment such as crampons, harnesses, ice axes, and ropes. Most of the climbing on this trip will involve walking roped together, including glacial crossings. The journey to the summit of Chulu East begins with a scenic drive to Besisahar.

The Chulu East Peak climbing trip also takes you through the stunning Annapurna Conservation Area, a region rich in natural and cultural diversity, with breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks in the background. The trek takes you through the Yak pastures above the beautiful settlement of Manang. After a successful summit of Chulu East, you will continue over the Throng La Pass (5,416 meters) and down into the Muktinath valley. The following day, you will descend to Jomsom and take a scenic flight to Pokhara.

The best season for Chulu East Peak climbing is from September to November (autumn) and from March to May (spring). However, winter can also be a great time to climb with proper preparation. The trip duration can be adjusted to your preference. A permit from the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) is required for peak climbing and can only be obtained through government-registered trekking companies.

The itinerary for this trip includes 18 days, with arrival in Kathmandu, sightseeing in the city, a drive to Syange, a trek to Dharapani, Chame, Pisang, Julu, and Chulu Base Camp, a rest day for preparation and acclimatization, a climb Chulu East and return to base camp, a trek to Manang, Yak Kharka, Thorang-La High Camp or Phedi, a crossing of the Thorang La pass and trek to Muktinath, a hike to Jomsom, a flight to Pokhara, a drive or flight back to Kathmandu, and a final departure day.
